A Cartersville man was killed by a drunken driver in a Cobb County head-on crash on January 1. The victim was identified as Jermain Wilkins, father to an 11-year-old boy. The mother of the victim, Malisha Wilkins said that he was a devoted father and shared a very close bond with his son.
The incident occurred on Dallas Acworth Highway near Autumn View Drive at 2:30 New Year’s morning. A man identified as, Robert Godhigh of Dallas, aged 30, while trying to pass another car, crossed into Wilkin’s lane. It resulted in a head-on collision.
Godhigh is currently facing charges of improper passing, DUI, and first-degree vehicular homicide. According to Wilkin’s mother, he was returning from work. She added that the driver took a young man’s father, a son, and a sibling.
Malisha Wilkin received a text message from an eyewitness of the Cobb County head-on crash. The witness shared that when the accident occurred they were with the victim, they called 911 and waited for him. They also added that it was irresponsible and senseless what the other driver did.
A GoFundMe has been set up by the Wilkins’ family to help bury the victim and make sure the 11-year-old son is taken care of.
Fifteen people died in car crashes during New Year’s weekend on Georgia roads, said the Georgia Department of Public Safety. There is no update on the status of Godhigh’s charges by the Cobb County police.
